Clean-up at Cleveleys!

Monday was a lovely day for a beach clean for once!

Another lovely day, is Spring finally on its way? The Rossall Beach Group had a great morning for their beach clean on Monday, with quite a lot of people turning out.

"It was great to be in the sun once again, but I have to admit it was very cold in spite of the sun here on the sea front. We managed to pick up 20 sacks of rubbish, weighing in at 71 kilos, so we didn’t do bad in a couple of hours, on a beach that looked quite clean!" says Chrissie.

The group run beach cleans every month - follow their progress on Chrissie's blog.

Sea Champion Hannah tells us about promoting her fundraising event at the "mini" March of the Mermaids!

On Saturday May 25th one mermaid and my team of sea creatures took the streets of Brighton, to promote the upcoming event ‘March of the Mermaids’ and to raise awareness of the Marine Conservation Society.

The sun was shining and it was the perfect day for a fishy invasion on dry land. We headed in to Brighton with our banners and flags which we have been painting this month, with ‘Rock Lobster’ by the B52’s playing out as we made our way to Brighton Fringe’s Fringe City and the crowds awaiting us.

I was pleased our mini march included a variety of sea creatures, including a jellyfish, a lobster, a castaway, Queen Neptune, sailors and of course mermaids. March of the Mermaids is not just for mermaids! Mermen, sea creatures and sea faring folk of all kinds are invited to come along too on July 27th!

We definitely attracted a lot of attention and curiosity amongst passers-by as we danced to our surf tunes…

Our mini mermaid mob was a successful way to help promote our event on such a rare sunny afternoon. I will definitely be venturing into the streets of Brighton again in June and July in my mermaid costume, hopefully with some more sea creatures joining me, to hand out flyers and make sure that all of Brighton knows that the mermaids are coming on July 27th!

Coming up next is our March of the Mermaids fundraiser party, at the Blind Tiger in Brighton on July 10th. Confirmed so far we have Brighton’s Stay Sick Dee-jays who’ll be playing tropical, tiki numbers late into the night, accompanied by projections of vintage mermaid cartoons and films. We also have one man stomping blues sensation, John Crampton joining us. More to be announced soon!

Find us on Facebook.
So make sure to come along in your best nautical / Hawaiian attire and join in the fishy fun before our main event on Saturday July 27th!

Best fishes,

Hannah

Saving our seas ...from your office!

Why not take the MCS message to your workplace?

Sea Champion Tamsin Palmer took the MCS message to the Met. Office in Exeter last week to showcase our work and get her colleagues involved in our coastal campaigns.

Sea Champion Pat O'Connell from Weston-super-Mare also went along for the day to offer support.

Tamsin's colleagues were keen to get involved in hands on conservation activities, with a staff member signing up as a Beachwatch Organiser and many staff members keen to become Beachwatch volunteers.

Big thanks to Tamsin for building the battle against against beach litter!

Why not encourage your colleagues or fellow students to help save our seas? Or how about holding a Big Blue Day?

Get in touch with your Coordinator for support and ideas.
